(DISCLAIMER: This review is based on my opinion only.)
Two centuries ago, three sisters were killed because the town believed they were witches. Every summer, the sisters return to inhabit three troubled girls to seek revenge, luring boys to drown. Penny has come to terms with the sisters’ annual hauntings, but when a mysterious boy, Bo, shows up in their town, unaware of what he’s gotten himself into, Penny takes it upon herself to protect him from the sisters.
This book was really tense and anxious, keeping the audience in suspense and wondering who the sisters inhabited. I think that it was a good concept and myth, but story-wise, I wasn’t really impressed.
Penny and Bo’s relationship kinda felt like insta-love to me and this book kinda reminds me of The November girl by Lydia Kang.
I actually predicted the plot twist and didn’t feel that this book was worth the hype (maybe because I kinda expected too much because everyone was raving about this book and Netflix also bought the rights for an upcoming movie adaptation?). Nonetheless, it’s a tragic and sad story about loss, revenge and sacrifice.
